Iron – The Oxygen Mineral
Iron is needed to carry oxygen to every cell in our body so unless we have adequate iron in our body, we will remain tired. Iron deficiency is common in women and indeed is the most common cause of fatigue.
We can become low in iron because:
1. We have heavy menstrual bleeding
2. We have poor gut absorption, especially if we are gluten intolerant
3. Have parasites in our gut that are stealing our iron
4. We do not eat enough iron rich foods
5. We are losing blood because of internal bleeding from our gut
A blood test for serum iron studies is an accurate way to see if you are iron deficient. It’s easy to overcome with oral iron supplements or intravenous iron infusions.
What oral iron Supplements do you recommend or have in stock?
Hi Margaret,
Firstly, have you had a blood test to check your iron and ferritin levels? You shouldn’t supplement with iron unless you’ve had a blood test to confirm your levels are low.
We don’t stock an iron product. Dr Cabot often recommends Spatone sachets which is water that is naturally high in iron (5mg /sachet). Floradix liquid iron contains cofactors that suppport iron absorption and is a good option. Capsules or liquid are generally better absorbed than tablets.
