Men’s Health

Your excess weight could be damaging your masculinity

Weight gain affects men’s testosterone levels adversely and men who become obese experience a fall in this hormone. This loss of testosterone may vary from mild to severe and can dramatically change the way a man feels and functions.

Testosterone is found in far greater amounts in men than women. It promotes the growth of muscle mass and maintains bone density. Testosterone also keeps sex drive, motivation, stamina and physical energy at healthy levels. Testosterone also promotes a positive mood and state of mind.

In overweight men the levels of this wellness promoting hormone are often too low with a very negative effect upon their quality of life.

The most common causes of excess weight in men include –

  • Syndrome X
  • fatty liver
  • lack of exercise
  • stress, depression and lack of sleep

Syndrome X can cause fatty liver so these two obesity-promoting conditions often co-exist and furthermore, both of these conditions can lead to diabetes – hence the new term “the epidemic of diabesity”.

Syndrome X is a chemical imbalance called insulin resistance, which leads to excess levels of insulin. Insulin is a fat storing hormone and thus men with Syndrome X find it impossible to lose weight. Insulin levels rise when too much fat is stored on the abdominal area.

High insulin levels make your body store fat

Insulin can become too high if you eat a lot of sugar and high carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and breakfast cereals. Our eating plans are scientifically designed to get your insulin levels down and get you into the fat-burning zone. They will also repair fatty liver and get your liver burning fat instead of storing fat.

In the book “Diabetes Type 2 – You Can Reverse It Naturally”, you will learn; the importance of protein to blood sugar control and weight loss, nutrients that diabetics need, reducing complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease and blindness. You will also learn specific foods, herbs and essential tests that all diabetics must have regularly to maintain good health.

It’s so important to have a healthy liver! Why?

Because the liver is the organ of longevity and if you have a healthy liver you will have a much lower chance of heart attack, high blood pressure and strokes.

Testosterone levels naturally fall as men age; however, they fall a lot more rapidly in overweight men. Studies conducted at the New England Research Institutes have shown that if a 1.83 cm man gains as little as 13.6 kg, he can lose testosterone the equivalent of aging 10 years. Men who experience a traumatic event like the death of their wife experience a similar drop in testosterone.

As men age they produce higher levels of a protein that binds with testosterone in the bloodstream. This means there is less free and active testosterone in the blood. Fat cells contain an enzyme called aromatase, which converts androgens into estrogens. The more fat cells a man has, the more estrogen his body produces.

Many overweight men experience sleep apnea, a condition linked to snoring, where breathing stops many times throughout the night. Sleep apnea is known to cause a fall in testosterone levels. Diabetic men who are overweight are even more at risk of low testosterone; half of these men have low hormone levels.

Low testosterone levels in men can produce a range of unwelcome side effects:

  • reduced sex drive
  • erectile dysfunction
  • fatigue and weakness
  • mood changes

Weight loss is the solution for men with altered testosterone levels. The most effective way to lose weight and get your insulin levels down is to follow a lower carbohydrate diet. It is essential to remove sugar from your diet and greatly cut down on high carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereals and foods containing flour. You must also avoid unhealthy fats such as processed vegetable oil, deep fried foods and margarine. Conversely, eating adequate levels of the good fats such as olive oil, oily fish, raw nuts and seeds and avocados will help to promote hormonal health and reduce heart disease.

An effective eating plan for men can be found in “The Liver Cleansing Diet” book.

The best ways to restore inadequate testosterone levels is via weight loss and exercise.

In some cases, it may be necessary to prescribe a testosterone replacement therapy to overcome symptoms. It is important to use natural testosterone in the smallest effective dose in the form of a cream.

Large doses of testosterone replacement therapy in men aged 45 years and older is usually not recommended because testosterone may promote enlargement of the prostate, which is a common problem amongst men of this age group already.
