Foods to fight wrinkles
We all know that sun damage is the biggest contributor to fine lines and wrinkles on our face, but did you know there are foods that help to protect the skin from sun damage? Certain antioxidants and good oils help to reduce the ageing effects of the sun.
Over exposure of the skin to the sun’s rays generates the production of free radicals and compounds that cause inflammation and the breakdown of collagen. Inflammation causes tissue damage and a reduction in collagen means the skin loses its firmness. It also encourages the formation of deep lines in the skin of the face and other parts of the body.
Some sun exposure is extremely beneficial, as it enables the body to produce vitamin D. However it is wise to expose your arms and legs to small and frequent amounts of sunlight, and protect your face with a hat or sunscreen.
Recently researchers have discovered that certain antioxidant compounds in foods have the ability to protect the skin from sun damage and therefore reduce the formation of wrinkles. We’ll all get more and more wrinkles the older we become, but it’s good to know that we can at least slow down and reduce this process. Some research has even shown that these antioxidant substances in certain foods can reduce the risk of sunburn. Of course it is important to be sensible when out in the sun, but research has shown that people with higher blood levels of certain antioxidants don’t burn as quickly.
The antioxidants that help to protect the skin include vitamins C and E, flavonols, carotenoids and ellagic acid (found in berries) and also omega 3 fats (found in fish and flaxseeds).
These antioxidants are found in the following foods:
o Raspberries
o Strawberries
o Blueberries
o Cranberries
o Green tea
o Cocoa
o Grapes
o Broccoli
It would be wise to include large quantities of these foods in your diet because the antioxidants they contain won’t only protect your skin, they’ll also reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease.
